Getting Youth Involved

Youth Gardening

Gardening offers an active and engaging opportunity for children to learn where their fruits and vegetables come from and teaches them the benefits of sustainability. The hands-on nature of gardening can enrich the curriculum, will improve kids' interest in learning, encourage them to eat well, and develop social skills. Introducing children to gardening instills a life-long passion for plants and respect for the environment.

At Caledonia Community Garden we've included youth in our overall plan by working together with our local Boy Scouts of America Troop 202 and building relationships with four Caledonia Community Schools in use of their greenhouses. The Boy Scouts will have hands-on participation at the garden by helping clean the fields and build the raised garden beds among many other volunteer aspects of the Community Garden. The Dutton Elementary, Caledonia High School, Kraft Meadows and Duncan Lake Middle Schools are donating their time and greenhouse space. We're working with and engaging the students in prepping and planting some of the seeds which will germinate into plants to be planted at the Community Garden. We're excited about involving these youth and look forward to their growing experience with us!
